Thought For The Day

Again it's a question of time! Yesterday in a blog comment, a friend suggested that the flaw during 'The Chimes of Big Ben,' being the wrongly set watch, was partly No.6's own fault. Well I suppose to a degree that's right. Because had No.6's wrist watch been waterproof, then there would have been no need for him to take Karel's wrist watch, or that of Post Five to time the journey, to make sure it tallied. But let us pause and consider for a moment. First imagine that No.6's wrist watch had been waterproof, and thereby not being water logged. Now we have to ask ourselves what time would No.6's wrist watch have said?
Now remember the Village was supposed to have been in Lithuania, on the Baltic. But in fact the Village is somewhere on the coast of Morocco, south west of Portugal and Spain, we learn this from 'Many Happy Returns,' in fact in the Village is in the same time zone as Great Britain. So even if No.6's wrist watch had not become waterlogged, and so was wearing his own wrist watch when the Chimes of Big Ben struck eight, the result would have been the same....his own watch would have been an hour slow to that of Polish time!

Be seeing you

  1. Hello David,

that's an interesting point! So Number Six wrist watch would have shown the same time as Karels. One might ask if the consequences would have been the same. I guess so.. At least Number Six would have turned suspicious.
From this point of view the only way to avoid this ending would have been if they had chosen a record where Big Ben chimed the correct number of times. So in the end it was their fault.

    Best wishes,

    1. hello Jana,
Yes I think that even if Number 6's wrist watch had not become waterlogged the result would still have been the same when the chimes of Big Ben struck eight. That No.6's own wrist watch would have said eight! I think it would have taken some bright spark to have the idea of putting No.6's wrist watch on one hour for the plan to have worked. But not even No.2 had thought of that one, or Nadia for all her cleverness!

      Very kind regards
